This is what I wore to class today:
  • purple long sleeve shirt
  • gray skinny jeans
  • gray and black logo Converse
My extras were
  • white belt
  • sheer black scarf
  • turquoise owl necklace
Nothing special...just trying to get through classes without freezing to death...

Anyone watching the Australian Open? Federer and Nadal in the final! I'm so excited! I like Rafa, his intensity and humbleness, but I'm a Roger fan...go Roger! (Sorry for any of you who don't know what I'm talking about...)

clutch this

Every time my mom saw me today she called me Bobby Dylan. I guess that my hair makes her think I look like him, and then I was wearing my Ray Bans, so that didn't help matters. Which is okay, I guess, there's alot of worse looking people that I could resemble...Here is some exciting news...

First of all - I got a job! Yay! Second of all - it's in a thrift store! What better job (for a fashionista) than at a thrift store? However, I don't start until March, so that is a bit lame and I will have to remain poor until that point. Thirdly - I will be making $7 an hour, more than the hardware store, and if they still like me after three months then I get a raise. Hoo-rah!

Before I went for my interview at St. Vinnie's (the thrift store), my mom handed me $5 and was like, "have fun!" Awww, my mommy loves me! And $5 in a thrift store? I could be dangerous. Here is what I emerged with (including a job!):

brown vintage clutch - $ .99 - this also has a chain that you can pull out for to hold on to if you don't want to clutch it.

oriental clutch - $ .99 - also has the chain option

black vintage clutch - $ .99

copper sequin bag - $1.49 - this one reminded me of my other one. However, this one is smaller and flimsier. But for that price, who can resist? It will make a good beach bag, at the least.

And there you have it - four cute bags for less that $5! That, my friends, is how you do it!

Thank you for all the support while I have searched for a job - I will keep you all updated on how things are going! And now...Bobby Dylan will leave the building ( least the seconds story of her house)...

weird dreams

How many times d'you think you say I had the weirdest dream last night!? Well, I had the weirdest dream last night. I would try to explain it, but that would just get long and since I don't even really understand it, I doubt any of you would either.

Here is my school outfit for today:
  • Levi's velvet collared shirt
  • black vest
  • dark straight leg jeans
  • hounds tooth Converse
My extra is my little blue belt and my love necklace.

This shirt was my dad's that was kept in our Dress Up Box for the longest time until I stole it away to my closed. I admit the burnt orange color (it looks redder in the pictures) is a bit strange, and so, I suppose, is the shirt in general. It is really soft velvet and is very warm - great for these sub-zero Wisconsin days. I have to ask my dad when it's from.

I'm having a great time with belts lately, can't you tell?

Monday, January 26, 2009

Well, today was my first day of the new semester. Pretty good, as far as first days go...rules, syllabuses, blah blah blah...droning on and on and on. But, most of my classes, save math, seem really great (Philosophy, Nutrition, and Crime & Criminal Justice). So, I have four classes, and three of them are in three different buildings, so at school I have to dress for the weather, and also for the thirty pound bag I have to carry (sooo many books...), which means probably no heels, especially when there's snow and ice on the sidewalks. Today's outfit:
  • University of Rochester tee
  • black drape cardigan
  • dark straight leg jeans
  • pink and green plaid Converse
My extras were:
  • tan wide belt
  • gold bangle
  • gold ring
This is more of my attempt at black and brown together...a little bit more drastic than the other night, still not all the way. I think it worked out well, though - I love this belt!
My first class starts at 8 AM and my last one ends around 12, so it's nice having the rest of the day free (for now while I'm almost jobless). However, I just spent three and a half hours on homework and trying to remember all the freakin' rules for now I feel like curling up with a blanket on my couch and watching
a) the Tudors
c) the Office
(I haven't decided yet). Except my brother and his (very loud) friends are playing Rock Band and I don't feel like going to the basement to watch that t.v. because it's freezing down there. Soooo...maybe I'll plan my outfit for tomorrow...

seven nation army...

Just a post to say that I am soooo proud of my baby brother! His band was amazing, especially considering that it was their first "gig." They played mostly covers, but there were two songs written by my little bro.

Here is a song - Seven Nation Army by the White Stripes. Also, I found out that during their playing, my bro was wearing ear plugs the whole time. How can you sing with ear plugs in?!?! And that good (well, at least I think it was good), too?!?

And, because this is a fashion blog...he was rocking the classic jeans and tee and high top Chucks.
Very nice.

That's my little brother!

Tonight I went to a "gig" that my brother and his band, Caught By The Fuzz, had at the high school. Here is what I wore:
  • blue striped long sleeve tee
  • cream silk slip
  • dark straight leg jeans
  • black socks
  • black and white slip on sneakers
My extras were:
  • charcoal scarf
  • brown braided belt
This outfit is an example of a way I would start to pair black with brown. I am always hesitant to do so, even though I know it's not against the rules, because in everyday life I always see the "fashion don't" brown and black people as opposed to the "fashion do" brown and black. This is my way of slowly easing in...because I know that when it's done right, the result is amazing!

This slip was my mom's and is doubled over under my blue shirt. I love the look, especially with the brown belt.

I applied for more jobs today and I actually might be hired at a local thrift store called St. Vincent de Paul (St. Vinnie's). I handed in my application and they wanted to interview me right away. While I was there I couldn't resist a little shopping even though I have only one job where I work once a week and am therefore poor.

However, everything ended up nicely as I left with this cute little chair, perfect for my little corner, and for only $10.

Here are some other pictures of what I bought a couple weeks ago at St. Vinnie's...

Cutest little red purse (think upcoming Valentine's Day...) - only $2.00!!! The strap is detachable and actually makes a really cute belt.

Four more belts... $2.58, $4, $4, and $3 Hurray for thrifting!

n = 3x^3+2x^2+17x+2...dn = 9x^2+4x+17

More adventures with the newly found vintage high-waisted pants! Today I went to buy my text books for next semester and to my job at the bookstore. This is what I wore:
  • red three quarter sleeve shirt
  • black vest
  • black vintage high-waisted trousers
  • gray knee-high socks
  • black and white spectator heels
My extra was the wide belt again.

School starts again on Monday...and I have to say, after having a month long break, I am so ready to go back. I'm taking
  • Philosophy
  • Nutrition
  • Crime and Criminal Justice
  • College Algebra
I'm kinda pissed to be taking College Algebra because I took AP Calculus my junior year of high school and thought that would be my fond farewell to math...not so. At least I will have learned everything before and it's the last one (LAST MATH) I'll ever have to take. Hurrah! I was actually looking through my Calculus notes last night for some reason (I kept them so I could look back and remember how smart I was at one point...) and was happy that I was no longer in that class. Although, I did think that it was pretty cool that I did know how to do those things (kind of knew how to do those things) at one point.

So what do you think...have any of you other fashionistas taken Calculus? What did you think of it?

dance dance

dance dance
dance dance by IndyIndy

I tried to combine a wild look with a sweet look in this outfit. I was going for the "wild" look with the shoes, bangle, and ring, while the sweet look was the focal point - the dress. Also, the cape with the brooch, if they would be worn, would add a quality of both, in my opinion.

I would be showing you my outfits, but lately I have been lounging around the house in sweats...

cheers, mate

Are you ready? Let's go.

Tonight I went out with my fam to see Slumdog Millionaire which is one of the best movies I've seen in a long time - see it!

In other news, I was rummaging in our basement today and found these amazing high-waisted pants that my mom gave to me a while ago. They are absolutely fantastic, and I'm so glad I found them - what I had them doing in the basement is beyond me. Here is my whole outfit:
  • black turtleneck
  • blue vintage cami tank (which is it?)
  • black vintage high-waisted pants
  • black suede knee-high boots
My extras were:
  • wide belt
  • flower necklace
The blue tank was also my mom's, which I found in the Dress-Up-Box that my brother and I used to play with endlessly. Also in The Box was a cream Christian Dior silk slip that is very delicious and I think might be worn as part of a top or something else creative.

Well, today it wasn't as cold, but it was snowing...again. It's quite hard to be fashionable in constant snowy subzero temperatures...well atleast for me.

I went out looking for a job again and this is what I wore:
  • black long sleeve Cabaret t-shirt
  • cross hatch flare jeans
My extras were:
  • gray scarf
  • red velvet sash
Kind of boring, I know, but as I said...I find it hard to be warm and fashionable at the same time...but I'm working on it.

mon frere

Today is my brother's 17th birthday. He had off of school because it was so cold out, and he also had off yesterday for the same reason, so that's pretty awesome. This is what I wore to dinner:
  • gray skinny jeans
  • white button up cat print blouse
  • black and gray houndstooth cropped blazer

My extras were
  • pink scarf
  • black ribbon
  • black and white polka dot bangle
  • red woven belt
This is the cutest blouse that my boyfriend bought for me in New York last year. He said he bought it because he missed Stella, my cat. Who can blame him - she is pretty cute.

When I begin to read other fashion blogs, once I have seen outfits and read comments, I want to learn more about the person behind the style. Here are some things about me.
  • I am a freshman in college with an intended major in criminal justice.
  • I have an amazing boyfriend who I have been dating for almost three years. He is also a freshman in college, but he attends the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, so that bit sucks eggs, as you might imagine. He is a bit of a genius and will be majoring in economics, math, or something equally...genius-y (or in my mind - boring).
  • My favorite color is green.
  • I started this blog as sort of an outlet for my creative and fashion-minded energy. I am not pursuing fashion (other than just dressing myself...and my boyfriend), but have always been told I have an eye for style. I like seeing the outfits others have created and I like putting my ideas out there for others to see.
  • I have recently become a vegetarian and it is really hard!
  • I live with my mom and dad and I have one brother - Garth. He is two years younger than me but a foot taller, which is nice sometimes, but mostly not. It's harder to boss him around that way, and I say that with the utmost love and affection!
  • I had two jobs - one at a hardware store and one a bookstore. I no longer have the hardware store job and, even though it was nearly the death of me, not getting a paycheck regularly is not so good. The bookstore is having tough times in this economy and is having a hard time putting me on the schedule all the time. It was my New Year's resolution to quit the hardware store, but only after I had found another job, which I haven't yet, but have been searching high and low.
  • My favorite thing to do is read. I read everything - all genres, non-fiction, fiction - everything. I love history and am currently in a Tudors phase. I recommend The Other Boleyn Girl and The Boleyn Inheritance by Philippa Gregory and also Brief Gaudy Hour by Margaret Campbell Barnes for historical fiction, and The Wives of Henry VIII by Antonia Frasier for non-fiction of this period. I also love reading about piracy and the American Revolution.
  • I love Disney movies - the old classics like Lady and the Tramp, Aladdin, and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. They are my films of choice most of the time.
Okay...hopefully you know me a little better now. It's always hard thinking of things to write about yourself because you know yourself, and you want to write what others don't know. You know?

Today, one of the coldest days we've had in years, I braved the cold in order to get to the bookstore to work. Needless to say, no customers showed up. Oh well...

Here is what I wore:
  • gray and black sweatshirt
  • gray skinny jeans
  • back cardy boots
My extras were:
  • charcoal and silver scarf
  • red woven belt
I found this sweatshirt by the trash at my house a couple of years ago and quickly rescued it. It used to be my dad's, and I have no idea why he was throwing it away. It is from the 1980 Olympic winter games in Lake Placid.

I tried rescuing another one of my dad's things the other week - a brown wool turtleneck sweater. I put it in a plastic bag and left it outside for a couple of weeks to kill any moths that could have been in it. Then, since it smelled horrible, I decided to wash it. I know you're not supposed to wash wool, but it really smelled gross. To make a long story short, it didn't help the smell, but the brown dye did bleed all over the other clothes that were in the wash with it. Yes indeedy.

hello six below

Ventured out in the sub-zero temperatures today to do more job shopping. Whilst dressing I opted more for the warmth factor than the fashion factor. Here is what happened:
  • black tee
  • black zipper hooded sweatshirt
  • light straight leg jeans
  • cardy boots
  • peace hat
My extra was a woven red belt which is my mom's. Oh, and also the aviators. Brrrrrrrrr! The hat, by the way, is actually my brother's which he bought at Claires. I was there and was all that's a girl's hat! And he was all who cares? He was right, I guess, it doesn't really matter. Plus it looks cute on me when I borrow it.

My mom made this scarf for my dad when they were first married. I love it so much - it's warm and has sentimental value.

a pink belt and two cups of milk bf's off to Rochester again, so I decided to turn that negative into a positive by going out and looking for a job. This is what I wore:
  • "I could have danced all night" white long sleeve tee
  • dark straight leg jeans
  • black and white spectator pumps
My extras were:
  • wide pink velvet belt
  • copper purse
This shirt is from when my family and I went to see My Fair Lady when it was playing in Milwaukee. It was really good. They had a really cool dance for Get Me To The Church On Time where they had tin garbage cans and they were using them like drums - it was sweet.

channeling clark kent...

I wish the weather in Wisconsin was compatible with this outfit at the moment...

measure your life...

I'm feeling full of love and stumbled upon this video from March '07 during the show A Chorus Line. It became a tradition the year before when we were putting on Seussical: The Musical that we would sing Seasons of Love from Rent right before every show.

Jocks, nerds, preps, goths, and every other kind of clique came (come) together every year to shed their labels for two months and become one kind of person - a player. That's what we were called, the OHS Players. Best times of high school, I can tell you that.

Enjoy the silly singing, the comments, the stage makeup, and the costumes. And listen to the words.

room cleaning extravaganza

I have been rearranging my room lately and have made great progress in some areas and not so much in others. Here are a few of the pics...

I now have a drawer in my dresser devoted entirely to sunglasses! I also can work at my laptop when it is on my desk because that's where all the sunglasses used to be.

Stella in the midst of stuff.

My pride and joy - my book corner. I added another bookcase to my room because I had too many books for just two. And they are all filled! I don't even know where I kept all the other books that weren't on a shelf before...

I like to press flowers from important events in books and stumbled across these petals in my dictionary which looked surprisingly beautiful.

look book

Today to my bookstore job I wore:
  • yellow Beatles tee
  • dark straight leg jeans
  • black and gray cropped blazer
  • black French heels
My extras were:
  • baby blue headband
  • blue leopard print scarf
This is also my look with my winter jacket, shades, and purse. What do you think?

Definitely need a belt...that's what I think.
